About Tiger Energy Storage
Tiger Storage is a proposed 200-megawatt battery energy storage project located on approximately 16 acres along 14th Street West in unincorporated Bowling Township, just outside Oak Grove. The site is directly north of an existing MidAmerican Energy substation.
The project will include battery energy storage units that store electricity when it is available and send it back to the grid when it’s needed most. Battery storage helps balance electricity supply and demand, supporting a stronger and more reliable electric grid.
The project is being developed by New Leaf Energy, an experienced U.S. renewable energy and energy storage developer.
Investing in Rock Island County
Tiger Storage would bring a significant new source of property tax revenue to the area from a relatively small project footprint.
The project is currently expected to generate approximately $1.2 million in property tax revenue each year, creating new funding that can support local schools, emergency services, and other public priorities.
How Battery Storage Works
Battery storage provides more reliability to the electric grid while helping to reduce energy costs for all consumers. By helping match electricity supply with demand, battery storage can support grid flexibility and make better use of the energy already being produced.
A grid-scale energy storage facility is connected to the grid at a transmission-level electric substation.
The batteries are charged by any sources of power injecting energy onto the grid at that time.
When energy is needed, batteries discharge their stored energy back onto the grid to be used by homes, businesses, and industries.
Energy storage also works to balance intermittent renewable energy resources like solar and wind.
